With the release of our first new fit since our launch last summer, we knew we wanted a girl who not only had the legs to carry our high-rise fit, but also the California cool that has captivated the fashion scene, turning Los Angeles into its own style powerhouse to rival New York.
Our resident photographer and friend, David Mushegain, shared our desire to spotlight a local girl on the brink of something huge – Angel Rutledge came to mind.
The two had shot the Elder Statesman look book together a couple years back. Even then David had been impressed with her, but they lost touch. By utter chance, last summer, David ran into Angel, working at a restaurant. Surprised to see she wasn’t modeling anymore, David asked to take some polaroids of her the next day. After, he met with her parents and told them he would love for Angel to quit her job and come to NYC for the show season. She did and the rest is history.
With one season under her belt, Angel opened the coveted Spring 2015 Proenza Schouler show during NYFW and was named by models.com as one of their top ten newcomers. The coming year is sure to be filled with even more for Angel: she secured an exclusive deal with Louis Vuitton in Europe, is the current cover of style.com print, shot with some of the biggest photographers including Juergen Teller, and signed with one of NY’s top agencies, The Lions.
David on Angel: “To me Angel is an amazing model because she is herself. And when someone can be themselves and share that with others it’s really something special. There is no faking it.”
Born and raised in Los Angeles, photographer David Mushegain started his career in photography while traveling as a street performer. He has become known for his portraits, often taken of his subjects while on the road.
David's work often appears in French, Russian and Japanese Vogue, i-D and V Magazine. Among other brands, he has shot for Costume National, Iro, H&M and Converse. David is now Re/Done's resident photographer.
